At Carolina Psychological Health Services, we provide comprehensive psychological testing to help clarify diagnoses, understand cognitive and emotional functioning, and guide effective treatment planning. Our psychologists use evidence-based assessment tools and a collaborative approach to ensure each evaluation is thorough and personalized.
Our goal is to provide clear answers and practical recommendations so you can move forward with confidence.
Psychological testing involves the use of standardized assessment measures that are designed to measure different areas of functioning.
Depending on the purpose of the evaluation, psychological testing can examine areas such as:
Cognitive and intellectual functioning
Learning and academic skills
Personality characteristics
Emotional and behavioral functioning
Results from testing are considered alongside clinical interviews, background information and professional judgement.
Psychological testing is sometimes recommended when additional information may help clarify concerns, inform treatment and provide a better understanding of strengths and weaknesses. Testing does not always provide definitive answers, but it can offer structured information that may be helpful in understanding patterns of functioning.
The psychological testing process varies depending on the purpose of the evaluation and the individual being assessed. In many cases, the process includes several steps:

No. While many clients benefit from combining therapy with medication, you can receive Medication Management services even if you are not currently in therapy. If therapy may be helpful, we can assist you in connecting with a therapist within our practice.
Your initial evaluation includes a detailed discussion of your symptoms, history, and goals. Your provider will explore whether medication may be helpful and, if so, which options are most appropriate. You will have plenty of time to ask questions and review your treatment plan.
Follow-up frequency varies based on your needs, response to medication, and safety considerations. Most clients are seen more frequently at the start of treatment and then transition to a routine schedule once stable.
Possibly, but not always. Some individuals receive a prescription during their first appointment, while others may require additional assessment. Your provider will move at a pace that feels safe and appropriate based on your needs and clinical best practices.
Some of our providers prescribe controlled medications when clinically appropriate; however, not all providers do.
This depends on each provider’s scope of practice, clinical judgment, safety protocols, and specialty area. If your treatment may involve controlled medication, we will ensure you are scheduled with an appropriate clinician.
Medication can reduce symptoms, but therapy supports long-term growth, coping strategies, and meaningful behavioral changes. Many conditions respond best to a combination of medication and therapy, though your treatment plan will be tailored to your preferences.
If you notice side effects, contact your provider promptly. Adjustments can often be made to improve your comfort—such as changing the dose, trying a different medication, or adding supportive strategies.
We understand that many clients—including those with military backgrounds or past side effects—may be cautious about medication. Your provider will respect your preferences and can explore alternatives such as therapy, behavioral strategies, lifestyle interventions, or referrals for advanced treatments like TMS or Spravato®.
Yes. Carolina Psych offers advanced treatments in office. If traditional medications aren’t helpful or well-tolerated, we can evaluate whether treatments such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) or Spravato® (esketamine) may be appropriate. Often times, clients must have tried and failed several medications prior to being approved for these services.
Yes. We are experienced in supporting service members and veterans, and we understand medication restrictions, readiness requirements, and privacy concerns. Your provider will tailor treatment to align with military guidelines and your personal comfort.
